meaningful diversion

ryan's uncle works at u of t and he just opened the banned and censored book exhibit last wednesday. we missed it because of class so he is opening the fisher library today to give us a private tour. and we get to go to the restricted section and touch stuff! i am sure they even give you those little white gloves and everything!

we should really be studying for our philosophy exam tomorrow, but hanging out at the library doesn't really seem like slacking off. maybe while i'm down there i can get ahold of one of those "why go to york when you could go to a real school?" tshirts. i hear they're a real hoot at parties.

"the excellent ants began with the ant-hill and with the ant-hill they will most certainly end, which does great credit to their steadfastness and perseverance. but man is a frivolous and unaccountable creature, and perhaps, like a chess-player, he is only fond of the process of achieving his aim, but not of the aim itself."

notes from underground, fyodor dostoevsky. 1864.

ten songs on the saddest playlist...

this is most definitely the darkest and saddest time of year. no more christmas, stuck with visa bills, snow, cold, no sunlight...tired all the time! in celebration of this depressing time of year, i compiled a list of my saddest songs so we can all have a good cry and get these winter blues out of our systems! (i added extra songs just in case you wanted to make a day of it)

"it was the most unusual lesson harry had ever attended. they did indeed burn sage and mallowsweet there on the classrom floor, and firenze told them to look for certain shapes and symbols in the pungent fumes, but he seemed perfectly unconcerned that not one of them could see any of the signs he described, telling them that humans were harldy ever good at this, that it took centaurs years and years to become competent, and finished by telling them that it was foolish to put too much faith in such things, anyway, because even centaurs sometimes read them wrongly. he was nothing like any human teacher harry had ever had. his priority did not seem to be to teach them what he knew, but rather to impress upon them that nothing, not even a centaurs' knowledge was foolproof."

"frightened, i looked at these unstable beings which, in an hour, in a minute, were perhaps going to crumble: yes, i was there, living in the midst of these books filled with knowledge describing the immutable forms of the animal species, explaining that the right quantity of energy is kept integral in the universe; i was there, standing in front of a window whose panes had a definate refraction index. but what feeble barriers! i suppose it is out of laziness that the world is the same day after day. today it seemed to want to change. and then, anything, anything could happen."

lost

ok. so i won't be making this a habit, but i need to talk about last nights episode of lost. i mean, you watch the whole show and after an hour claire comes stumbling out of the bush and then nothing!

jessa, calm down. i know - that's television, but they probably won't show a new episode now for weeks and the baby's gone. what happened to the baby? i guess that's all those crazy black stone people wanted.

so they stop looking for claire, and they find her when they are looking for the dog - ok? why weren't they looking for her? i know they started to after charlie read the diary, but it's an island - how far could they have gone? anyway, she is back now - at least she wasn't hanging from a tree, but i think she was tied to a big rock.

at least we got to see a polar bear which was freaky and then i thought michael was going to die because they were spending so much time on making him look like a good but misunderstood father. boon is over his sister (wierd) and locke and michael now have some unspoken bond thing and no one said sorry to each other - they just knew (ok, i am getting this out of my system, thanks for humoring me).

martin luther king day

"We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people."
-"Letter from Birmingham Jail," April 16, 1963

martin luther king day is not a holiday, but a day for action. it is a day earned by public pressure, petitioning and civil rights marches. on this day, we can celebrate the power that one person can have to change history and the lasting permanence of one voice through time.

black thursday

"The Idea is Simple. Just Like the President" black-thursday.com

"On January 20th, people [of america] will join together to speak in one voice. By staying home from work, by not buying products from chain stores, by turning off their cable TV, by not buying (or using) gasoline or other oil-based products, by not making long-distance phone calls - in an infinite number of ways, Americans will send George Bush a message he sorely needs to hear. America expects accountability, transparency, humanity and justice from an administration which has, up to now, provided little in any of these areas."

while this doesn't apply to us here in the great white north, it is important to spread the word. bush's first inauguration was a disaster! hopefully this one will be worse.

psychic blog

i just thought i would share this with you because i think you will really "get it". i posted about that simpsons episode, "homerpalooza" (post before last) and THAT NIGHT it was on tv! i should have my own show where i talk to people's dead loved ones from beyond the grave. i think i'll call it....crossing over with john edward.

cashing in

i got a letter a little while ago from a certain airline company (two guesses to who it might be) in response to a complaint i had registered at the end of summer. to compensate for the piece of wood that ended up in my airline food and eventually embedded into the back of my throat, i get to choose between a cheque for two hundred dollars or a three hundred and fifty dollar travel voucher.

there are a few things i have to say about this, the first being that in order to use that travel voucher, i would have to give them even more money to take a trip (my flight was eight hundred dollars). what can i say, i'm money hungry now. two hundred dollars cash would mean that they paid me about twenty dollars an hour to sit in pain and fear (on my birthday). its better than working at the restaurant, but still.

the second point - they said they were ONLY giving me said amount because they couldn't find out what the problem was in the first place. a tip: don't eat airline food unless you want to be stuck in a hospital for five hours (on your birthday) with foreign objects cutting into your mucous membranes. apparently this is just normal airline stuff.

thirdly - they are giving me these settlement options WITHOUT ANY PROOF. no doctor's report, no piece of wood...not even a boarding pass. you don't even need a ticket. just send off a letter saying that you had a piece of wood stuck in your throat and its their fault. then wait about two months and you can get your settlement.

cheering

i realize that all of my posts have been pretty serious lately, so i wanted to share a simpsons episode that was really special to me.

do you remember the episode, "homerpalooza"?

Homer: So... how about those rainbow suspenders, huh?
Bart: Dad...?
Homer: Pretty cool way to keep your pants up, eh?
Bart: Dad!
Homer: I see these kids now with "Jive" printed on their shirts. Pftt... Now, I can teach you how you're supposed to say "jive".
Lisa: Dad... Please just drive the car, dad.
Homer: I'm watching the road, sweetie. You jive turkey. See? You got to sass it. Quit jivin' me, turkey. You got to sass it. A "turkey" is a bad person.

and the moment that really brings me back is when homer is driving bart (and company) to school and he starts giving them a lesson in music history...

Homer: Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson starship. The stage was now set for the AlanParsons project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.

i swear TO GOD! those were the exact words my dad used when he gave me the big music talk.

PM's visit to china

i got an email from the canada tibet commitee this morning and i will quote:

"CTC has moved Tibet forward on Ottawa's foreign policy agenda. The Prime Minister's Office has said that Tibet will be raised with the Chinese government during Mr. Martin's first official visit to China later in the month. We're greatly encouraged by that news, but we're waiting to see whether it proves to be more than a token gesture. Our collective efforts are being covered by the media".

front street extension

here is a sample letter from sierra club of canada to mayor, david miller.

send this letter (or a modified version of your own) to the miller man himself:

Toronto City Hall, 2nd Floor, 100 Queen St. West, Toronto ON M5H 2N2

Dear Mayor Miller:

I appreciate all the good work you have done in your first year as Mayor. I supported you in your campaign, and would continue to do so if and when you seek re-election as Mayor, which I hope you do. I know you have as a priority the betterment of the City’s waterfront. To that end, I am writing to ask you to support the deletion of funds for the Front St. Extension (FSE) from the City budget.
  • At $256 million, it will be the most expensive 2 km of road ever built in Canada.
  • The money should be diverted to public transit at the waterfront and across the city.
  • The project will consume 75% of all available funds for the waterfront. These funds are needed for real priorities that could turn the Toronto’s waterfront into a clean, green showplace.
  • It is a waste of money to add a new interchange joining Front Street to the Gardiner if the City of Toronto is considering demolishing the expressway. There is never enough money to satisfy all the needs of Toronto.

Given all the above, this expenditure cannot be seen as a rational use of City funds.Thank you for considering my views.

Sincerely,

Paula Boutis

the storms are brewing

my internet connection has been down for the last two days and every time it happens i realize how addicted i am to my computer. that being said, you might understand why i will have so many posts for today...

the most notable activity in the last few days has been the weather systems moving around toronto. it went up to 19 degrees yesterday which apparently has never happened before in the recorded history of weather. it went from -2, poured a lot of rain and made a lot of thunder and then went up to 19. today its -7. does that make any sense to you? call me naive or uninformed but isn't this the effects of global warming?

even if it is some weather cycle that us humans cannot really understand because our idea of time is only really a fragment of what time is to the planet, isn't that still something to be nervous about? maybe something we should rather not prevoke into being a bigger problem?

maybe it was really only the cowboy boots and acid washed jean jackets that i had to deal with yesterday at school...i just wasn't expecting to see them again so soon.

as for global warming, i don't think there are too many people worried over it's onset. as a matter of fact, according to scientific projections, canada will be the best place to live when global warming hits hard. peter calamai, science reporter for the toronto star doesn't seem concerned. click to read his article about how global warming means cashing in on tourism in canada. "when you have average temperatures that are one degree warmer than usual, spending goes up by 4 to 5 per cent," says dan scott, a university of waterloo geographer. and die-hards will be happy to know that, yes you will be able to golf in the middle of february.

what am i going to tell the polar bears?

the beef is mad...

another case of bse has been confirmed in canada - making it the second reported case in two weeks. it looks like the us plan to reopen the border to canadian beef is in jeopardy...

this cow was born after 1997 (when canada put a ban on feeding cows to other cows), so the bse is being attributed to left over feed that was somehow left in the system after the ban.

"NDP agriculture critic Charlie Angus said these new cases show Canada should have instituted more than a partial ban on feed containing animal parts." full story

in the mean time:

a bit of a rant...

this might come off as a personal rant, but really it is a warning to anyone who wants to major in philosophy: you will have to read hobbe's leviathan like eight times in eight different classes. well, i am up to eight so far...

not that reading about the justification of an absolute sovereign ruler over and over again isn't interesting, but feminism was cut from my political philosophy class for lack of time.

it's even more frustrating when i consider that simone de beauvoir is really the only female philosopher that i have encountered in university so far, while hobbes (along with locke, hume, descartes, berkeley and spinoza) has been with me all the way.

anyway, i have accompanied this rant with a peaceful picture of irises from my garden...

Tsunami close to home...

I work at a restaurant where 90% of the kitchen staff is Sri Lankan. One of the sous chefs lost eleven people in his family alone from the Tsunami. A prep chef lost his whole property. It is not an excuse to ignore something because it is so far away or because it seemingly does not effect you, but this disaster is effecting everyone. Some of the members of the kitchen staff are walking the streets outside of the restaurant during their free time to collect donations and this is happening all over the city and the country and all over the world. Donate or volunteer to collect donations. Write letters to your political reps and urge them to send relief or more relief.

I want to commend Mayor of Toronto, David Miller for his efforts in this painful time. He has made people in Toronto really feel empowered and ambitious to help those in need. "Miller urged residents to donate all they could. 'Torontonians have family and loved ones in every affected country,' he said. 'But even those without a direct connection to their disaster want to and need to help.'" full story

Miller is not only sending money, but he wants to send people.

"Calling on workers like paramedics and water experts to volunteer their skills, Miller said the city will send them where it's deemed necessary by the federal government, whose members should soon be returning from the afflicted areas.

The city's emergency management office — normally activated to respond to local crises like the blackout two summers ago and the SARS outbreak in the spring of 2003 — will be in charge of coordinating the effort, he said.

'We know how to rebuild water systems. We know how to get public health nurses to people on the ground. And I think the best use of our resources, including money, is to ensure we get as much of that expertise as possible to the affected communities to build a sustainable recovery,' Miller said."
The Toronto Star

While critics argue that sending people will only cost more than just sending cold, hard cash, it is so wonderful to see people waiting by the phone desperate to get over there to help...hands on. Rumour has it that David might be itching to go over there himself.
