red-shoulder hawk
this is a picture of the bird that ryan and i saw in our backyard yesterday. obviously this is not the exact bird, but this is the species.
apparently they are breeding right now so it was looking for some territory and a mate. it flew from our yard and then started soaring sixty feet in the air circling our block.
we have amazing trees in our neighbourhood that are over forty feet tall and there are no branches until about twenty-five feet up. these are ideal conditions for nesting.
i am definitely keeping my eyes out for the next little while because red-shoulder hawks are rarely sighted and very threatened.
here is a map of their range.
UPDATE: i figured since i have seen so many, i would start a hawk count.
in toronto: one red-shoulder hawk and one (i think) red-tailed hawk (dark morph)
in king city: one cooper hawk and two inidentified hawks
in new market: three unidentified hawks soaring in a group (one looked more orange), one cooper hawk and two more unidentified hawks.
TOTAL: 11

That is so cool. I've never even seen that bird before.
it kind of reminded me of fawkes, the phoenix because its feathers were so bright
ha ha! i would love that. i will take any oppertunity to brush up on my climbing skills.
since i posted, i have seen four more hawks. one brown one in our neighbourhood and then three more just on the way up to my mom's house! maybe i am just paying attention to them now (or they are planning their attack strategy).
11 !
That is a lot of Hawks.
i think the count has actually stopped. a) because i am back in toronto and b) because i just think they started mating already and you can only really see them when they are displaying and playing.
