the beef is mad...

another case of bse has been confirmed in canada - making it the second reported case in two weeks. it looks like the us plan to reopen the border to canadian beef is in jeopardy...

this cow was born after 1997 (when canada put a ban on feeding cows to other cows), so the bse is being attributed to left over feed that was somehow left in the system after the ban.

"NDP agriculture critic Charlie Angus said these new cases show Canada should have instituted more than a partial ban on feed containing animal parts." full story

in the mean time:

BLACK BEAN BURGERS (makes eight)

4 cups black beans
1 cup peeled and diced carrots
1 cup peeled and diced onions
3/4 cup diced red bell pepper
3/4 cup diced yellow bell pepper
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 cup plus 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
3/4 cup cornmeal
1/2 tsp ground cumin
2 tbsp chili powder
1/4 tsp cayenne
1 cup chickpea flour
1 1/2 tsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
plus buns and garnishes

1. in a large saucepan, simmer the beans in 5 cups of wateer for 35 minutes. Drain and reserve 1 cup of the cooking liquid.

2. in a large bowl, mix together the carrots, onion, peppers, salt, 1 tsp olive oil and cornmeal. Stir in the cumin, chili powder and cayenne, chickpea flour, lemon juice and cilantro. Stir in the black beans and form into patties. Add a bit of the reserved cooking liquid to the mixture to moisten if too dry.

3. in a skillet, heat the remaining olive oil and cook the burgers for about 3 minutes on each side.

I'd like to know who the person is who came up with the idea of making cows eat cows. Maybe he should be fed some ground up dead human meat and we can watch what happens to him.

The whole situation is disgusting.
It definitely makes you not want to ever touch meat again.

what really bugs me is they are paying more attention to how bush is going to react than to the safety of their own citizens

ralph klein (alberta premier) has suggested that the slaughter of all cattle is an inevitability. it would be similar to england's response a few years ago.

wouldn't that be a nice waste of millions and millions of lives. i'm sorry but can't we think of a better solution than that?

for an update: the mass slaughter is a no-go. the government is going for mass testing instead.
